Last night I watched an episode of the Dick Van Dyke Show. Rob Petrie (Dick Van Dyke) and his neighbor Jerry Helper decided that it would be a great idea to buy a boat. Their wives, Laura (Mary Tyler Moore) and Millie disagree and think owning a boat together will destroy Rob and Jerry’s friendship. Naturally, the men don’t listen and buy the boat anyway. In the show, their wives are proved right after Rob and Jerry have a rough maiden voyage, but everything turns out alright in the end. (This is a 1960s sitcom after all!) And this got me thinking about why I love boating.
I love the feeling of a moving boat on the water, with the cool wind and water spraying everywhere. But if that’s all boating is then there’s something missing for me. What I love about boating is the experience I get to share with others. Joy, laughter, thrills, and chills are not the same when you are alone. That’s why I ask who your favorite boating companion is. Maybe it’s your husband or wife, boyfriend or girlfriend, best friend or new friend. Or maybe your favorite companion is “man’s best friend”. No matter who your favorite companion is, remember how fortunate we are to share the experience of boating.
